These Inventors Modernized Home Electricity
Thomas Edison. Benjamin Franklin. Alexander Graham Bell. These are three of history’s well-known inventors. However, as the movie “Hidden Figures” reminds us, many unsung heroes have existed throughout history. This Black History Month, read on to learn about how these three Black inventors revolutionized the field of electricity, from how people protect their homes to how they turn on lights.
Lewis Latimer, the Mind Behind the Carbon Light Bulb Filament
Lewis Latimer is renowned for many inventions and patents, including inventing the carbon filament light bulb in 1881. This invention revolutionized modern lighting, allowing for longer-lasting bulbs that were brighter and cheaper to produce than earlier filament lights. Before Latimer's innovation, most light bulbs used a paper filament, which burned out quickly and produced little light. His use of carbon made the bulbs more efficient and economical. By replacing the paper filament with carbon, Latimer was able to increase the life of light bulbs up to twice as long and make them much brighter. This invention enabled a much wider range of people to use light bulbs in their homes, offices, and businesses.
His innovation also paved the way for other improvements in lighting, such as the tungsten filament light bulb and fluorescent bulbs. Latimer's invention of the carbon filament light bulb was a major step forward in modern lighting and has had an enormous impact on the world today.
James E. West, the Creator of the Electret Condenser Microphone
James E. West, along with his co-inventor Gerhard Sessler, is responsible for one of the most important and groundbreaking inventions in audio technology: the electret condenser microphone. This type of microphone has become ubiquitous in daily life, found in everything from smartphones to security cameras to home automation systems. It revolutionized digital devices, providing clear, natural audio that captures sound with incredible accuracy.
This type of microphone is sensitive and can capture sound, even at low levels and in noisy environments. It is also very reliable and easy to use, with minimal setup required. The invention of the electret condenser microphone has allowed audio devices to become smaller and more efficient while still providing excellent sound quality. This innovation has enabled audio technology to be used in various applications like voice recognition. It is also cost-effective, making it ideal for consumer applications like smart home devices and portable audio recorders.
Marie Van Brittan Brown and the Home Security System
Marie Van Brittan Brown's revolutionary home security system was the first of its kind. It consisted of peepholes, a camera, a monitor, and a two-way microphone, which allowed her to see and speak with whoever was at the door before she opened it. The system also included an alarm button to contact the police if she felt threatened.
Brown's patent for the home security system she invented in 1966 was granted in 1969, inspiring subsequent home security systems that are commonplace today. Her invention not only revolutionized the security industry but also changed how people think about safety and protection in their homes.
